CHURCH HISTORY

CHURCH HISTORY

Early Beginnings

First Presbyterian Church was founded on July 6th 1827 and was the very first church established in Richmond.  As our congregation has grown over the past 200 years, we have maintained our commitment to the Reformed Faith, our Presbyterian Traditions, and our Christ-like service to the community.

Our Heritage

Throughout our history, we have been blessed with dedicated pastors, faithful members, and a compassionate commitment to serve our local community and the world at large.  Our Neo-Gothic sanctuary (built in 1920) stands as a testament to the faith and discipleship of generations past.

Today and Tomorrow

As we look to the future, we remain committed to our mission of loving Jesus Christ and making Christ's love known.  We continue to serve our community through various ministries, outreach programs, and worship services that embrace the needs of our modern congregation while glorifying our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

THE SANCTUARY

Our sanctuary has been specifically designed to facilitate accessibility and ease of gathering for our worshiping community.  It has been fashioned to promote a sense of community and to engender a sense of reverence before God.  Our sanctuary includes a central pulpit for the reading of Scripture and the preaching of the Word.  It also provides for the celebration of the Sacraments, with a font for Baptism and a table suitable for the people’s celebration of the Lord’s Supper.  The arrangement of the worship space at First Presbyterian Church visibly expresses the integral relationship between the Word and Sacraments and their centrality in the worship of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

CHURCH COVENANT

CHURCH COVENANT

Adopted by our session in 2025, our church covenant is more than just a set of rules. It is an outline for how we strive to live out our faith in community with one another. It is a promise that we make to each other and to God about how we will treat others and how we should expect to be treated while participating in church functions and as part of the First Presbyterian congregation.

ELDERS & DEACONS

Session (Ruling Elders)

Our Session, composed of ruling elders, provides spiritual leadership and oversight for our congregation. These dedicated individuals work alongside our pastor to guide the church in worship, education, and mission.

Board of Deacons

The Board of Deacons serves the congregation through ministries of compassion, witness, and service. Our deacons care for members in need and coordinate our church's benevolent outreach.  The deacons meet the second Sunday of every month immediately following the service of worship. If you have a prayer request or praise please reach out to a deacon or complete this form.
